Psychotherapies are techniques of influence that aim at modifying the other person in a desired direction. Throughout history, different peoples have always had at their disposal care procedures that aimed to transform human beings.

Some authors have attempted to identify contemporary and Western psychotherapies. There could be 400 or 500 of them… These techniques range from the most fancy to the most scientific with a wide variety of indications and results. In the contemporary West, several forms of psychotherapy are emerging. There are families of psychotherapy, groups and subgroups, for example Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a subgroup of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), i.e. ACT is also CBT.

Various types of psychotherapy

Integrative psychotherapy is a modern approach. It attempts to reconcile and potentiate the effects of different tools of various types of psychotherapy. It involves a therapist trained in many different methods. It is not a simple mix of methods, but rather the art of composing an eclectic offer of care for the right person at the right time.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is based on experimentation and scientific proof of its effectiveness. It is effective in certain disorders and are constantly evolving. CBT is gaining more and more ground in the field of psychology.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a protocol seeks to get the patient to accept what is often refused and avoided when avoidance leads to the renunciation of actions that are important for the person.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is indicated for treating trauma and life events that have created a negative impact, something painful and poorly integrated in a person. This process of care is based on the execution of eye movements in parallel with psychological work on the episode in question.

Hypnosis is a very ancient technique. Already used under the Ancien Régime by the Marquis de Puységur and Franz Anton Mesmer, hypnotic trance is a process that can induce changes in a person by temporarily modifying their relationship to their reality.

Psychoanalysis is historically the first psychotherapy introduced to Western society. Its results are controversial and not scientifically validated. It remains interesting for non-ill people who wish to find some meaning in their lives.

Systemic and family psychotherapy treats an individual in the midst of his or her own family. It is common for a person to have a symptom resulting from family dysfunction. This type of treatment concerns the whole or a part of the family, which requires the adherence of several people in order to carry out the treatment.

Humanistic Therapies, Gestalt, NLP, Transactional Analysis Therapies are of North American origin. Most of them were developed in the ’50s and the ’60s. Humanistic psychotherapists frequently practice these different techniques together.

Body psychotherapies such as Reichian Analysis, Gerda Boyesen’s Model, Primal Cry, Holotropic Breathing are techniques where the body plays a central role. Some of these therapies were very fashionable in the ’70s and the ’80s, but they never really took off in France.

Whatever type of approach or psychologist you choose, you must be comfortable and confident with your therapist and never feel manipulated by him or her. If this happens, run away and look for someone else.
